Review:
Ann Buzenberg - Daykeeper Magazine "Angelic instruments may
be different than a viola, an alto flute and a C-flute...but
the sound cannot be more sublime than the sweet melodies on
this new CD called Dragonflies. "Cynthia and I were like two
brushes painting on the same canvas," says Harold. "These pieces
are all spontaneous musical improvisations, with no plan or
direction other than who would begin to play first." Dragonflies
was born out of synchronicity. Engineer and friend David Doroski
had been suggesting for years that Harold and Cynthia get together
musically to "see what might happen." Finally, it did happen
in three separate occasions in the living room of David, on
the outskirts of Boulder, Colorado. Fortunately, David had the
foresight to push the record button on his dat machine. Using
Harold's haunting CD recording called The Drone™ as a background,
the two gifted, classically trained musicians played spontaneously.
They say that they simply "got out of the way" in order to allow
the music to play them. I've wondered what music the angels
might play in heaven. Now, I think I know."
Composer's
Notes:
By Harold Moses I have been fortunate in the last few years
to perform with a number of wonderful artists. These include
overtone master David Hykes, composers and pianists Michael
Hoppé and Robert Coxon, composer and flutist Tim Wheater, pianist
and celebrated author Don Campbell, and space music pioneer
John Serrie. However, until this CD I never had the luxury of
improvising for hours at a time in a home studio setting. Cynthia
and I have known each other for years, and had played music
together numerous times with other musicians. However, this
opportunity was unique: one engineer, two microphones, and spontaneous
improvisation. Today it is difficult for me to imagine how this
music happened, and I was there! What I appreciate most about
our creation is the great sense of musical architecture - no
doubt a tribute to our classical roots. All training aside however,
this music has a quality and energy that is beyond explanation
- other than a visitation by the muses…

Liner
Notes:
This
recording was borne out of circumstance and synchronicity. On
three separate occasions, flutist Cynthia Jaffe and violist
Harold Moses improvised these intimate musical dialogs in the
living room of their close friend David Doroski, on the outskirts
of Boulder, Colorado.
Using
The Drone™ as a canvas upon which to paint the music, these
spontaneous improvisations occurred with no plan or direction
other than who would begin. The resulting rhapsodies reveal
the playfulness, passion and pathos visited upon two classically
trained musicians who simply got out of the way in order to
allow the music to "play them."
All
of the rhapsodies received their names after many listenings,
with the exception of "Kosovo." This haunting piece was named
in the middle of the night, soon after its birth. Recorded during
the height of the bombings, this music carried deep and powerful
images of its meaning and message even as it came upon us. We
dedicate this rhapsody to peace and harmony among the peoples
of the world.
We
are especially grateful to David Doroski, who after years of
suggesting that we get together to "see what might happen,"
had the foresight to push the Record button on the DAT machine.
