Summary:
The Drone is a recording of a "C" and a "G" played simultaneously. This pair of notes is described musically as the interval of the Perfect Fifth. Lao Tzu described the interval of the Perfect Fifth as "...the sound of the harmony of the Universe." In classical music from India, the drone (usually played on a tamboura) begins and ends all pieces, and is described as "the Breath of God."

Through proprietary technology, these tones have been combined in such a way as to provide the listener with a unique ambient musical sound experience. Endless arrays of harmonic overtones assemble and co-combine to create a "soundtrack for synchronicity." There is no other recording that creates the amazing aural effects of The Drone.

"Good Vibrations" by Rebecca Crichton Boeing: Manager Magazine Issue Three, 1999
Science continues to delve into the mysteries of the universe, often discovering proof to validate some of humanity's oldest beliefs. The role music plays in human emotional and intellectual development is a perennial question for exploration.

Throughout history, people have made music and discovered the power of music to transform and enhance the experience of their lives. Plato wrote, "All audible musical sound is given for the sake of harmony." He suggests that music can be used to reduce disharmony and restore order.

So it follows that the harmonic overtone series, a scientific formula for the vibrational frequencies raised above any fundamental note, may provide a variety of answers for creating harmony in our lives.

Composer and violist Harold Moses is a passionate believer in the power of harmony. Moses, who calls himself a "musical cosmologist," composes choir music that merges the languages of physics, science, and spirituality.

Several years ago, Moses bean to work with the interval of the perfect fifth, the sound made when C and G are played simultaneously. Referred to by Lao Tzu, the Chinese philosopher as "the sound of the harmony of the universe," the perfect fifth is the most stable of all musical intervals. For millennia, Indian musicians have tuned the tamboura, the stringed instrument that accompanies Indian ragas, to play the interval as the fundamental tones over which the music unfolds.

Moses recorded the two notes on a 60-minute CD, which he named The Drone. When he played The Drone at a soft volume, he discovered he could compose more fluently and his creativity increased. In numerous workshops since then, Moses has confirmed that listening to The Drone for even five minutes creates a sense of relaxation and focus. In addition, having The Drone softly playing in the bedroom often increases the depth and restfulness of sleep.

Moses believes The Drone represents a vibrational state of pure potentiality, a sort of vibrational equilibrium. "The Drone creates a harmonic template that lets us experience what equilibrium sounds like. It causes my mind to settle into a place of balance. …I become aware of things which are not in balance, whether on an emotional, physical, or spiritual level

." Vibrationally, The Drone is based on the mathematical relationship of three to two. This ratio creates a nesting in the wave forms that in turn causes nesting in the resulting overtones. The result is a broad range of harmonic alignments occurring over many octaves. Because The Drone creates overtones across a full sonic spectrum, everyone (even those with partial hearing loss) experience a variety of harmonic stimulation.

Unlike conventional music, which Moses refers to as a "memory magnet" that elicits past experiences and associations, The Drone doesn't direct the mind anywhere in particular. Instead, there is increased potential to focus on the task at hand. "Think of it as a creative problem solving tool that may help you hear what an answer actually sounds like," Moses says.

Composer's Notes
By Harold Moses The Drone is a recording of a "C" and a "G" played simultaneously. This pair of notes is described musically as the interval of the Perfect Fifth, represented as a "P5". The P5 is the most stable of all musical intervals and always measures five note names apart (example: C-d-e-f-G, A-b-c-d-E, etc.) Much has been written regarding the Perfect Fifth from musical, scientific and spiritual perspectives. Lao Tzu described the Perfect Fifth as "...the sound of the harmony of the Universe." In classical music from India, the drone (usually played on one or more tambouras) begins and ends all pieces, and is described as "the Breath of God." The Perfect Fifth is an 'open interval,' meaning it is neither major or minor, augmented or diminished. The Perfect Fifth can be thought of as a musical canvas, upon which all other notes and collections of notes can combine to paint their colors, shapes and textures in a variety of choral structures.

When you listen to this tape, you will hear many more notes than the C and the G. These other notes are the result of overtones - a natural sonic occurrence in which vibrations arrange themselves in a predictable and consistent pattern of pitches over the foundation tone. Also referred to as harmonics, the overtones are not 'played' by the instrument, rather they result from tones that are being played. All tones create overtones, which are more or less audible depending on the construction of the instrument and the method by which the sound is produced. Bells, drums, violins, flutes, trumpets, horns, all produce overtones. In fact, simply modifying the amount of air pressure in a brass instrument will result in a change of pitch as the instrument responds to the natural overtone series. (The military tune Taps, which utilizes the natural harmonic overtone series of the bugle, can be played without the use of any finger valves...) When the interval of the Perfect Fifth is sustained for a period of time, the overtones characteristic of each of the foundation tones will align with one another, creating a harmonic overtone array. Your recording of The Drone allows you to hear these arrays, and the resulting 'dance ' that occurs as overtones align with one another.

As you listen to The Drone, I invite you to allow your thinking mind to drift and float with the music. The first few times you listen you may want to turn off the phone and locate yourself where you will not be disturbed. Allow yourself to simply hear the music. After a while, you may find The Drone useful for playing in the background wherever you happen to be. Your personal remarks are important to our research - we are gathering responses from listeners around the world. Thank you for participating in this work. May your journey be made richer as you experience the "Breath of God."

Unique Time Track™ System:
The Drone features a helpful and unique index tracking system that facilitates listening to the recording for a specific period of time. This is ideal for listeners who wish to pray, meditate, or utilize The Drone for session* work without being distracted by the need to keep track of elapsed time. Each index point on the CD reflects the amount of time remaining - the CD will fade out to silence indicating the desired time of focus has concluded. (Example: To experience a 15-minute session, the listener would begin The Drone on Track #7, which is 15 minutes from the end.) *The Drone is used regularly by massage therapists and health practitioners.

How is The Drone different than other music? Music creates sensations that effect our mood, feeling, and emotion through the interplay and movement of melody, harmony and rhythm. The Drone however, creates unique aural sensations through the interplay and interaction of harmonics, or overtones. These overtones, which sound many octaves above the foundation notes, continually move and dance, though remaining in a fixed harmonic system. Our many listener's report their minds simultaneously enter a state of relaxation and heightened awareness. You may notice this creates an environment where your mind can become clearer while you are able to focus more completely on the task at hand.

Will The Drone effect my work and productivity? Indeed! Our informal study on the effects of listening to The Drone in the workplace indicates this music creates a remarkable sense of calm and stillness. A state government worker shared with me that people who come into her small office often tell her how peaceful the space feels. It is often the 3rd or 4th visit before they ask, "Is there a sound in here?" The Drone is a beautiful, ambient musical texture that can be played softly to tune your work environment.
